What a phone QR code contains
A phone QR code holds a tel: link, the same kind of link that makes phone numbers tappable on websites. Spaces, brackets and dashes are removed, leaving just the digits and the + sign.
tel:+15550100142
Scanning shows the number and offers to call it. The phone never dials by itself; the person taps Call.
Tips for printing and scanning
For phone number QR codes
- Print the number beside the code too, for people who’d rather dial or can’t scan.
- Use the international format (+44 20…, +1 555…) if visitors or customers may be abroad.
- Check the number is answered during the hours the code will be seen, or say when to call.
For any printed QR code
- Size: print the code at least 2 cm (0.8 in) wide for something held in the hand. For signs and posters, make it about a tenth of the scanning distance: roughly 10 cm (4 in) wide to scan from 1 m (3 ft).
- Contrast: use a dark code on a light background. Light-on-dark codes and pale brand colors fail on some phones.
- Quiet zone: keep a blank border of at least 4 modules (the code’s small squares) around it. Don’t crop it or put text and graphics right up against the code.
- File type: use the SVG for print, since it stays sharp at any size. The 2048 px PNG is enough for print up to about 17 cm (6.8 in) wide at 300 dpi.
- Surface: avoid glare from glossy laminate, tight curves (bottles, cups) and folds that cut through the code.
- Test: scan a printed proof with an iPhone and an Android phone, at the real distance and in the real lighting, before you print in bulk.
When to use a dynamic code instead
A phone code holds the number itself, so it can’t be changed after printing and scans aren’t counted.
If the number may change, or you want people to see more than a number, use a hosted contact page: CirculateQR’s business card template opens a page with Call, email and Save contact buttons that you can update at any time, and it counts scans.
The code you make on this page is static: free, permanent and private, but fixed once printed. Static and dynamic codes compared.
Phone QR code questions
Does scanning a phone QR code call the number automatically?
No. The phone shows the number and offers to call it. The person chooses whether to call.
Do phone number QR codes expire?
No. The number is stored in the code itself, so it works for as long as the number does.
Should I include the country code?
Yes. Starting with + and the country code (like +1 or +44) means the number works when scanned from any country.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Both recognise tel: codes in the camera app and offer to call.
Can I see how many people called from the code?
No. The code goes straight to the phone’s dialler without passing through a server. Your phone system’s call logs are the place to look.
