Dynamic QR codes

Dynamic QR codes you can change after printing

A dynamic QR code holds a short CirculateQR link (circulateqr.com/go/…) instead of your final destination. Each scan looks up where the code should go right now, so you can change the destination, pause the code or add routing rules at any time, and the printed code never changes.

A static code is the opposite: the content is written into the code itself. Static codes are free and unlimited on every plan and keep working forever, but they can’t be edited or tracked. Use static for a WiFi password or a contact card that won’t change, and dynamic for anything you may update or want to measure.

How it works

The printed code stays; the destination can change

  1. Create the code in Studio

Pick a link, menu, event, form or another type. Tracking is on by default, which makes the code dynamic.
  2. Download and print

PNG, SVG for basic codes, or a print-ready PDF.
  3. Change it whenever you need to

Edit the destination or pause the code from its page in My Codes. For hosted pages, edit in Studio and republish to the same code.
  4. Watch the scans

Every scan is logged with the time, device and approximate location.

In detail

What you can do with a dynamic code

Edit the destination

Change the link on the code’s page. The next scan goes to the new destination.

Pause and resume

A paused code shows a neutral “This QR code is paused” page until you switch it back on.

Set an end date

Stop a code on a date you choose, up to five years ahead. Available on every plan.

Route by context

Send scans to different links by device, time, day, phone language, location, weather or scan count.

Tag campaigns

Add UTM tags so Google Analytics and similar tools see which code, poster or mailing sent each visit.

Count scans

Total and unique scans, devices, places and times, with bot scans filtered out.

Plans

What each plan includes

Each new dynamic code uses one QR credit. The free plan: 10 QR credits a month; up to 5 dynamic codes live at once, each live 14 days unless upgraded or unlocked for $5; unlimited static codes. The $5 unlock keeps one code live for good and can be paid before or after the code pauses; upgrading reactivates every paused code.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code contains a short link run by the QR provider rather than your final destination. When it is scanned, the provider sends the person to whatever destination is currently set. That lets you change the destination after printing and count scans.

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?

A static code stores its content, such as a link or WiFi password, directly in the pattern. It can’t be changed or tracked, but it works forever without any service. A dynamic code stores a short link, so it can be edited, paused, routed and tracked, but it relies on the provider. On CirculateQR, plain static codes are free and unlimited on every plan.

Can I change where a QR code goes after printing?

Yes, if it is a dynamic code. Open the code in My Codes, change the destination and save; the printed code stays the same. A static code can’t be changed, because the destination is part of the pattern.

What happens to my dynamic codes if I stop paying?

They keep working while your subscription is active and for 14 days after it ends. Then they pause and show a neutral “not active” page until you subscribe again. Nothing is deleted, and static codes keep working regardless.

Do dynamic codes expire on the free plan?

Yes. The free plan gives you 10 QR credits a month; up to 5 dynamic codes live at once, each live 14 days unless upgraded or unlocked for $5; unlimited static codes. A paused code comes back if you upgrade (every paused code does) or pay the one-time $5 for that code, which you can do before or after it pauses.

Is there a limit on how many times a code can be scanned?

No. CirculateQR doesn’t cap scans on any plan. What varies by plan is how many new dynamic codes you can create each month and how far back you can see scan history.
